I was recently fortunate enough to attend a seminar presented by author and leading nutrition expert @patrickholford.uk who gave a lecture in Stanmore on the rising brain health crisis and how to prevent cognitive decline.
The stats are high - almost 1 million people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK (many undiagnosed) and in 2022 it was the leading cause of death in the UK, with over 71,000 people thought to be living with young-onset dementia.
It’s a subject close to my heart as I watch those dear to me struggle, and witness pharmaceuticals being endlessly prescribed and more natural solutions blocked or dismissed, when early preventive measures could be made to maintain brain health and memory function.
Nutrition aimed at reducing inflammation is key, as is keeping on top of your B12 and B6 in order to break down homocysteine levels. Keep the cerebrospinal fluid healthy so it can cleanse the brain of toxins, get enough sleep and exercise, drink less alcohol and encourage the growth of new neurons by learning new skills. Patrick even presented one of his elderly case studies who managed to reverse his dementia following a strict regime of dietary changes and gentle exercise. So why do 1 in 14 people over the age of 65 still have dementia in the UK? 🧠
